While his passion for Orthopaedic Surgery took him to the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital in London, UK, in 1994, Dr Kresevic later refocused his dedication on the holistic realm of general medical practice. In 1998, he achieved Fellowship of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP), a testament to his unwavering commitment to patient-centered care.

Dr Kresevic’s dedication to healthcare extends into the realm of sports medicine. He is deeply immersed in the sporting pursuits of the Cairns community, from nurturing junior talents to supporting elite competitors. His contributions extend to serving as Team Doctor for various sporting entities, including the Northern Pride Queensland Rugby League (QRL) team, Brothers Rugby League teams, Cairns Taipans, and Marlins/Dolphins Basketball teams, as well as the Saints Swimming Club.

After completing secondary education, Jim pursued higher education in Brisbane, where a deep-seated passion for emergency medicine and rural healthcare began to blossom. Graduating with distinction from a double degree in medicine and science at the University of Queensland, Jim embarked on a mission to make a positive impact on healthcare in regional areas.

Hospital Experience Across Queensland

For the past four years, Jim has called Cairns home, working tirelessly as a rural generalist registrar. With a background primarily in emergency medicine, he has honed his skills and gained valuable experience through placements in Mareeba, Bowen and Cairns. This diverse experience has equipped him with a comprehensive understanding of the unique healthcare challenges faced by rural communities.

Adventures Beyond Medicine

Beyond the medical realm, Jim leads an active and well-rounded lifestyle. Weekends are often spent out on the water, as he enjoys taking the boat out to the Great Barrier Reef for fishing and snorkeling adventures. A fervent advocate for health and fitness, Jim is a regular park runner and harbors a love for playing and watching basketball.

Fueling a curiosity for the world, he also harbors a deep-seated love for travel and immersing oneself in different cultures. This passion for exploration not only enriches personal experiences but also contributes to a more holistic approach to patient care.

Dr Emma Schwerkolt

Dr Emma Schwerkolt: Committed to attentive and empathetic care

Dr Emma Schwerkolt commenced her medical career with a dedication to patient care and genuine compassion for others regardless of their circumstances. She proudly joined Edmonton Family Medical Centre in early 2024, under the supervision of highly respected practice principal Dr Anthony Kresevic.

From Melbourne to life in North Queensland

Dr Emma grew up in Melbourne but moved to North Queensland before beginning her medical studies at James Cook University, graduating with her Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) in 2020. She has set down roots in Cairns, with her husband and two dogs, and couldn’t imagine living anywhere else. Emma has fallen in love with the greenery and the local creeks of Cairns and loves taking her dogs for a swim or run around at the park – even when they get completely covered in mud!

Diversity in General Practice

One of the things that really drew Dr Emma to General Practice was the diversity of medicine and people. Emma is passionate about supporting patients to feel comfortable with their own health, particularly in traditionally stigmatised areas such as mental health and sexual health. Emma also has interests in women’s health and chronic disease management, but she loves seeing all sorts of presentations and patients.

Constant Learning and Responsible Practice

Dr Emma endeavours to provide treatment that is up-to-date, effective and evidence based. She has a broad range of professional experience, including remote clinics with the Royal Flying Doctor Service, Cairns Sexual Health Service, Atherton and Cairns Emergency Departments, peadiatrics, mental health, and general medicine. As a GP Registrar, she is always drawing on the knowledge and expertise of more experienced doctors at the practice.

Life Outside the Clinic

When she’s not running around with her dogs or practising at the clinic, Emma enjoys a few creative activities at home. She loves to play guitar and enjoys crafts like macrame and cross stitch. Sometimes though she just loves to snuggle on the couch with her dogs while watching a show or reading a good book.

His relentless pursuit of medical excellence led him to Jamaica in 2011, where he dedicated seven years to serving the communities through hospitals and primary healthcare. This global perspective enriched his understanding of healthcare’s universal significance.

In 2018, Dr Hein brought his wealth of experiences to the shores of Australia. Over the past four years, he has immersed himself in the intricate world of general practice, steadily expanding his expertise and nurturing his commitment to patient well-being.
